Mouth ulcer treatment is usually simple because most small ulcers heal on their own within 7 to 14 days. Gentle rinsing, mild food and avoiding whatever is rubbing the sore can make those days much easier. If an ulcer lasts two weeks, keeps returning, or makes eating and drinking difficult, it needs a proper check.
What usually causes chhale in mouth?
Most mouth ulcers are small, shallow sores called minor aphthous ulcers. They can sting while you eat, brush or speak, but in most cases they settle on their own within 7 to 14 days.
Sometimes there is an obvious reason. You may have bitten the inside of your cheek, scratched the area with a hard toothbrush, or caught the lining of your mouth on a sharp tooth or broken filling. A wire from braces can rub one spot repeatedly. A loose or poorly fitting denture can do the same.
Stress and lack of sleep can also be linked with recurring ulcers in some people. Very spicy food, sour foods and acidic drinks may not be the original cause, but they can make an existing ulcer much more painful. Some people also find that toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulphate, usually written as SLS, seem to trigger or worsen ulcers.
Vitamin B12, iron or folate deficiency is another possibility, especially when ulcers keep returning. Viral infections can also cause mouth sores, although these are not always the same as the common aphthous ulcer.
Which type of mouth ulcer do I have?
You do not need to diagnose it yourself, but the pattern often gives useful clues.
| Type of ulcer | Common cause | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Small round or oval ulcer inside the lip, cheek or tongue | Minor aphthous ulcer, stress, lack of sleep, nutritional deficiency in some cases | Gentle rinsing, soft food, protective or numbing gel, time |
| Sore beside a sharp tooth or broken filling | Repeated rubbing or accidental biting | Remove the source of irritation and protect the area while it heals |
| Ulcer from braces or denture | Wire, bracket edge or loose denture rubbing the lining of the mouth | Orthodontic wax if advised, denture adjustment, dental review if rubbing continues |
| Several mouth sores with fever or other illness | Viral infection or another medical cause | Fluids, rest and medical advice when needed |
If one spot is being rubbed every day, the ulcer may keep reopening. In that situation, mouth ulcer treatment is not only about applying a gel. The source of irritation needs to be corrected.
What can I do at home for a mouth ulcer?
For a simple ulcer, home care is mainly about keeping the area comfortable and avoiding further irritation while it heals.
You can rinse gently with warm salt water or plain water a few times a day. Do not make the salt water very strong, and do not scrub the ulcer. Use a soft toothbrush and clean your teeth carefully around the sore. If your brushing is rough or the bristles are hard, this is a good time to review common brushing mistakes.
For a few days, choose food that does not sting. Soft rice, khichdi, dal, curd if it suits you, banana, soft vegetables and other mild foods are usually easier than pickles, chilli-heavy dishes, citrus fruits and very sour chutneys. Our guide to food for healthy teeth can help you plan everyday meals once the soreness settles.
Stay well hydrated. A dry mouth can make any sore feel worse.
A pharmacist may suggest an over-the-counter numbing gel or a protective oral gel. Follow the label and age instructions carefully, especially for children. If you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or have known allergies, ask the pharmacist or your doctor before using a medicated product.
People often ask about ghee, turmeric or other home pastes. There is limited evidence that these make a typical ulcer heal faster. A small amount may feel soothing to some people, but do not use anything that burns, irritates the tissue or contains unknown ingredients.
What should I avoid while the ulcer is healing?
The aim is simple: do not keep injuring the same patch of tissue. Avoid very spicy, sour or sharp foods for a few days. Do not pick at the ulcer with your tongue or finger. Use a soft toothbrush, and if a brace wire, denture edge, broken filling or sharp tooth is rubbing the area, arrange a dental check rather than waiting for repeated injury.
Alcohol-based mouthwashes can sting badly on an open ulcer. If a rinse makes the area burn, stop using it and ask your dentist or pharmacist for a gentler option.
Why do my mouth ulcers keep coming back?
Recurring mouth ulcers deserve a little more attention than a one-off sore.
We first look for a local cause. A sharp tooth edge, rough filling, brace component or denture can keep irritating the same area. If you wear a denture and it has become loose, do not keep forcing it over a sore spot. The fit may need adjustment. This is particularly relevant for older adults, and our guide to dental care for seniors explains more about keeping dentures and gums comfortable.
If there is no clear dental cause, a dentist or doctor may ask about sleep, stress, diet, stomach or bowel symptoms, medicines and how often the ulcers appear. Blood tests may be suggested to check for iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, particularly if ulcers are frequent or you also have tiredness or other symptoms.
Changing to an SLS-free toothpaste can be worth trying if you notice a pattern with your current toothpaste. It will not solve every case, but it is a simple change for some people with frequent aphthous ulcers.
Do not keep using numbing gel week after week without finding out why the ulcers are recurring.
When should I see a dentist for a mouth ulcer?
Most minor ulcers heal within two weeks. If they are clearly improving, you can usually continue gentle home care.
Please arrange a dental or medical review if:
- the ulcer has not healed after two weeks
- it is unusually large or you have many ulcers at once
- the same spot keeps ulcerating
- eating or drinking is becoming difficult
- you also have fever
An ulcer caused by a broken filling, sharp tooth, braces wire or denture often improves only after the rubbing is stopped. This is part of routine general dental care, and it is usually straightforward for us to check the area and identify a mechanical cause.
If you are not sure whether a sore is an ulcer, or it looks different from your usual chhale, it is better to have it examined rather than repeatedly treating it at home.
Mouth sores in children need a little extra care
Children can get ordinary mouth ulcers too, but some viral illnesses cause several mouth sores at the same time. Hand, foot and mouth disease is one example. A child may also have fever or spots on the hands or feet.
The main concern is drinking. If a child is refusing fluids, passing much less urine, seems unusually sleepy, or cannot drink because the mouth is too sore, contact a doctor promptly.
Avoid giving adult mouth gels to a child unless a doctor, dentist or pharmacist has confirmed that the product and dose are suitable for that age.
What we check at the clinic
At an appointment, we look at the ulcer itself and the nearby teeth, fillings, braces or denture. We also ask how long it has been there, whether it keeps returning, and whether there are ulcers elsewhere in the mouth.
If the cause is local irritation, correcting that cause is usually the main step. If the pattern suggests a medical or nutritional factor, we may advise you to see your doctor or have blood tests.
For an ulcer that is painful now, gentle care is usually enough for the first few days. But if it has crossed the two-week mark, keeps returning in the same place, or is making it hard to eat or drink, book an assessment rather than continuing home treatment. You can book a check-up with Haihyvanshi Dental Clinic & Implant Centre on IIM Road, Lucknow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a normal mouth ulcer take to heal?
Most minor aphthous ulcers heal on their own in 7 to 14 days. Salt water or plain water rinses, a soft toothbrush, mild food and a pharmacist-recommended protective or numbing gel can make the area easier to manage. If the ulcer is not healing by two weeks, arrange a dental or medical review.
Why do I keep getting mouth ulcers again and again?
Recurring ulcers can be linked with repeated rubbing from a sharp tooth, filling, braces or denture, as well as stress, poor sleep or deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12 or folate. Your dentist may check the mouth for irritation and, if needed, suggest that you see a doctor for blood tests.
Can I apply ghee or turmeric on chhale in mouth?
Ghee, turmeric and other home pastes are commonly tried, but evidence that they make a typical mouth ulcer heal faster is limited. If something feels soothing and does not irritate the area, it may be harmless in a small amount. Avoid anything that burns, stings strongly, or contains ingredients you cannot identify.
When should I worry about mouth sores in my child?
Hand, foot and mouth disease can cause several mouth sores in children, often with fever or spots on the hands or feet. The main concern is hydration. If your child is not drinking, is passing much less urine, seems unusually sleepy, or cannot swallow fluids because of pain, contact a doctor promptly.
